George Howard Rankin

George H. Rankin, 89, died Monday, September 17, 2012. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, August 17, 1923 and attended Cleveland public schools. He graduated from Case School of Applied Science, now Case Western Reserve University, with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He received a commission in the Naval Reserve from the US Naval Academy during World War II and served in the Pacific Theater. In 1948, he married Phyllis Archer of Shaker Heights, Ohio and they had almost 53 years of wonderful life together. He retired from US Steel after 37 years of service and was associated with the steel wire industry for 42 years. Late in his career, he was instrumental in designing and operating one of the first and largest tire wire plants in the USA in Lumber City, Georgia. In 1981, Phyllis and George built a second home at the Landings and in 1988 they retired there where George was an Avid Golfer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis.

He is survived by his two children, Constance Schopfer Gary of Liverpool, NY; and Robert Rankin Marge of Palos Verdes, CA; four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by his loving companion, golf and bridge partner for the last 8 years, Mary Fritz.

A memorial service will be held at the Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church, Friday, September 21, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.
